š§ What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common but serious sleep disorder that causes repeated breathing interruptions during sleep. It can lead to:
Loud snoring
Choking or gasping at night
Daytime fatigue
Increased risk of heart attack and stroke
š OSA affects approximately 39 million adults in the U.S., many of whom are undiagnosed.
ā OSA is an independent cardiovascular risk factorāmeaning it increases your risk of heart disease even if youāre otherwise healthy.
š” CPAP and Other Treatments: Helpful, But Not Enough
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)Ā is the standard treatmentābut many people find it uncomfortable or stop using it.
CPAP does not reduce cardiovascular riskĀ despite improving sleep quality.
Mandibular devicesĀ (oral appliances) may help in mild cases, but they typically donāt work for moderate-to-severe OSA.
InspireĀ® surgeryĀ is an option for some patients, but insurance often requires a BMI under 35.
š New Breakthrough: The SURMOUNT-OSA Trials
Researchers studied a new medication called tirzepatide (Zepbound)Ā in a large clinical trial known as SURMOUNT-OSA.
š In over 450 adults with OSA and obesity:
Tirzepatide reduced breathing interruptions by 25ā29 events per hour.
Participants lost significant weight.
Blood pressure and inflammation improved.
𧬠Zepbound was FDA-approved in December 2024 as the first drug specifically for OSA in adults with obesity.
š Why This Matters
OSA symptoms improved significantly
Weight loss may help reverse the root cause
Potential cardiovascular benefits, unlike CPAP alone
š Insurance Coverage
ā Medicare and many insurance plansĀ cover tirzepatide when prescribed for moderate-to-severe OSA in adults with obesity.š§¾ Inspire surgical treatment usually requires a BMI < 35Ā for insurance approval, even though FDA approval goes up to 40.
